Why it is important to change water in your goldfish tank

February 24th, 2010 by admin

Changing water is the most basic part of goldfish care. You don’t need to change all the water in your tank every time you clean the tank. In fact, you shouldn’t change all the water in your tank – the dramatic, sudden change in temperature and water chemistry can shock your fish, and you will remove the beneficial bacteria in your tank. Even if you have a filter, you should do a partial water change one a week to dilute any toxins in the water. Changing part of the water will also allow you to clean debris from the gravel. You’ll need two buckets, a siphon hose (available from your local pet store), and a water treatment solution to remove chlorine, chloramine, nitrates, and ammonia. The night before your partial water change, fill a bucket with cold tap water and treat it with your solution, enough to change 20% of your tank’s total volume. The next day, use the siphon hose to drain 20% of the water from your tank. You don’t need to remove your fish. Be sure to use the siphon hose to vacuum the gravel. Discard the dirty water down the drain and slowly pour your treated clean water into the tank. That’s it!
