Free Music Downloads Online and the Future of Music

November 30th, 2008 by admin

With the advent of the Ipod and the Mp3 format, free music downloads have become rampant globally over the past several years, leading to the possible demise of the major record label as we know it today.  From the year 2000 to today, recorded music sales have fallen by over 50 percent and the downward trend appears to have no end in sight.  For most, having the option of free music downloads online or over $10 for the CD, “free” will win out more times than not.

Major labels have been in the process of dumping bands all over the place, while new artist signings have fallen to new lows.  What about artist development by the major labels?  Unfortunately, the era of developing and growing of artists has fallen by the wayside.  The future of the music business is unclear at the moment, but we can only hope that the artist is not the ultimate victim.
